Budget, eco rainforest retreat

If you are looking for an authentic tropical rainforest eco getaway experience, the Sanctuary Retreat in Mission Beach is a real hidden gem and best of all it comes at surprisingly affordable prices. ‘Sanctuary’ is the key word here; accessible only by 4x4 (you will be picked up from town or from the car park) the lodge blends neatly into a thick, lush rainforest on a steep slope which overlooks the ocean. There are two choices of accommodation, rainforest huts are the cheaper option at about AUD $33 pppn, the more luxurious cabins are AUD $165 for a double. Each hut is tucked away in the trees, at night you really get the feel that you are in the jungle when the forest comes alive with the sounds of tree frogs and the illusive, curious looking, Cassowary which by the way you are quite likely to spot as there are a couple of resident birds.

As well as a place for serious relaxation you can cleanse your body as well as your mind, the menu is spectacular and healthy, dishes such as tofu Thai curry and seriously good homemade muesli topped with bananas, yogurt and honey for breakfast. Fear not though there are also dishes to thrill the ‘normal’ pallet. You can also go self catering if you are on a strict budget. Activities at the lodge include, a dip in the pool, yoga, rainforest walks and of course the mandatory trip to brooks beach where (at one end) clothing is optional!

Even travelling alone is made easy here, you can be sure of a friendly warm welcome and certain to make new friends at the Sanctuary, for more information check out the website http://www.sanctuaryretreat.com.au/index.html
